How to Renew Your GVC: Everything You Need to Know - iRed Limited

If you’re a remote drone pilot operating within the Specific Category in the UK, maintaining your General Visual Line of Sight Certificate (GVC) is essential. Renewing your GVC through iRed, a CAA-approved Recognised Assessment Entity (RAE), is a straightforward way to ensure you stay compliant with the latest regulations — and continue flying legally and confidently.

Here’s a clear breakdown of the GVC renewal process, costs, and how to book your assessment.

Why Renew with iRed?

iRed offers both online and in-person options, giving you the flexibility to complete your renewal in a way that suits your schedule. As a CAA-recognised training provider, you can trust that your renewal will meet regulatory standards and keep you operational without disruption.

Step 1: Theory Assessment

All remote pilots must pass the most up-to-date theoretical knowledge exam, with a minimum score of 75%. This isn’t just a formality — it ensures you’re up to speed with the latest drone regulations and safety practices.

Key details:

  • Only one attempt is permitted. If you don’t pass, you’ll need to retake the full course and complete a different exam paper.
  • Choose between:
    • Online AI-proctored exam via DigitalChalk — take it from home, anytime.
    • In-person assessment at iRed®’s training centre.

Step 2: Practical Flight Assessment

Unless you meet exemption criteria, you’ll also need to retake your practical flight assessment.

Exemptions apply if:

  • You’ve completed at least 2 hours of flying within the past three months (confirmed via flight logs).
  • You’re certified in both fixed-wing and multirotor UAS — and can demonstrate recent experience for each.

You’ll need to submit:

  • Proof of identity (e.g. passport or driving licence).
  • Your current GVC certificate.
  • A valid Flyer ID.
  • Flight logs showing your recent flight activity.

If your documentation doesn’t fully demonstrate your current competency, iRed may ask you to complete a skills demo or recommend further training.

What Does It Cost?

  • GVC Renewal via iRed: £299 (inc. VAT)
  • Operational Authorisation Renewal (via CAA): £234 annually
(Note: This fee is subject to yearly changes, usually announced in December and applied in April.)

When Should You Renew?

The CAA advises that renewal exams must not be taken more than six months before your current certificate expires. The good news? Your renewed certificate is valid for five years from the original expiry date — no time lost.
