Introducing the XT2

27th March 2018, DJI announce the latest in next generation commercial drone solutions with the Zenmuse XT2 Thermal Imaging camera. Yet another collaboration with FLIR Systems, the FLIR Tau2 thermal sensor has been integrated alongside a 4K visual camera, all mounted on DJI’s stabilised Zenmuse gimbal.

With FLIR having announced the Duo Pro R back in 2017, it was only a matter of time before their natural partnership with DJI produced the XT2. The original XT (also based on the Tau2 core), was an incredibly popular system for the DJI Inspire 1, M100, M200 series and M600 platforms, but was limited to a single camera and relied on additional cameras to be mounted to obtain visual imagery. Now, with the integration of a 12MP 4K visual sensor, both thermal and visual images can be captured and viewed simultaneously. The inclusion of the visual camera has resulted in the availability of MSX (visual overlay on thermal), so details can be realised on the thermal image, enabling quick data interpretation.

The new XT2 has a wide variety features, some new, such as onboard processing, enabled by a suite of processors and vision algorithms, to help identify what is important with in your image. Temperature Alarms, heat tracking (lock on to hottest temperature) and the previously mentioned MSX. A really useful feature, is the IP44 ingress rating, which means the camera will now match that of the M200 series (and slightly exceed)

The new Zenmuse XT2 thermal imaging camera is suitable for a wide range of applications including and not limited to: Firefighting, Search & Rescue, Solar Panel Inspection, Roof inspections, heat loss surveys, power line inspections and much more – the possible applications are endless.

DJI have announced that the XT2 will be compatible with the M200 series and M600Pro, which means it will NOT be compatible for the Inspire 2, – a disappointment to many I2 owners. DJI are now starting to segment their product offers into two sectors: consumer and enterprise, which is most likely when the Inspire 2 series will not be compatible.

The XT2 is controlled through the DJI Pilot App or DJI XT Pro, which will have additional functionality added to manage the new features and image processing of the camera.

The Zenmust XT2 thermal camera system will have 10 different options available, with different frame rates, resolutions and lens sizes. DJI have expected that pricing and availability will be in mid April on a first come first serve basis. iRed will be offering pre-orders when pricing has been confirmed. Keep an eye out on the shop for any further announcements.
